Plastics are 'Unwrapped' at Upcoming Museum Exhibit

Plastics have redefined and shaped the contemporary world, and the Fullerton Museum Center’s latest exhibition, Plastics Unwrapped, will showcase this modern marvel and its influence on our daily lives.

Opening Saturday, February 6, from 6-9 p.m., the Plastics Unwrapped exhibit will share what life was like before plastics, how they are made, and what happens after they are thrown away.

The opening reception is $10. Museum Members are free. The Plastics Unwrapped exhibit will run through Sunday, May 1, 2016.

Plastics Unwrapped is a traveling exhibit organized by the Burke Museum, University of Washington. The national tour has been generously sponsored by Boeing and the University of Washington.

As part of the Plastics Unwrapped program series, a lecture, “Plastics in the World’s Oceans,” will be led by Professor of Oceanography, Sean Chamberlin, from Fullerton College, and Liesel Thomas, of marine research group, Algalita, on Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. Attendees are invited to learn about plastic pollutants in the world’s oceans and what can be done to remedy the increasing volume. A second lecture, “The Future of 3D Printing” will be held on Sunday, March 13, featuring Professor Frank Guthrie of Fullerton College, who will discuss this emerging technology and its application in business and personal use. Both lectures are complimentary with Museum admission: $4 general, $3 students and seniors, $1 children aged six to twelve, and children under six are free.

Finally, families are invited to enjoy the culmination of the Plastics Unwrapped exhibit on Sunday, May 1, during Family Day. Families are encouraged to bring a piece of e-waste for safe and responsible recycling to receive free admission.

Running concurrently with Plastics Unwrapped is the Stroller Brigade, an early-childhood program to introduce museums to toddlers and preschoolers. Children and their caregivers can enjoy docent-led games, activities, and crafts in the main gallery, and also be exposed to the Plastics Unwrapped exhibit. The free community program runs Wednesdays, from February 10 through April 27, 2016, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The Plastics Unwrapped exhibit, lectures, and Stroller Brigade are all held at the Fullerton Museum Center, located at 301 N. Pomona Ave. in Fullerton. For more information, please call (714) 738-6545.
