To help conserve water and support long-term sustainability, California has passed a new law (AB 1572) that phases out the use of drinking water to irrigate non-functional turf. That's grass that isn't used for recreation or community activities.
This includes decorative lawns in front of buildings, along sidewalks, and in medians. The ban will roll out in:
- 2027: Municipal and institutional properties
- 2028: Commercial and industrial properties
- 2029: Common areas in multifamily housing and HOAs
One example of this is Fullerton's City Hall front lawn would be considered non-functional turf.
What is allowed?
Watering to keep trees and other permanent plants healthy is still okay. Park, sports fields, and areas used for public events are also exempt.
Single family residences are not included under AB 1572.
