SEASONAL COMPOST PILE PROGRAM
Fullerton’s Seasonal Compost Pile Program is back!
From June 1st through the first week of July, residents are welcome to pick up free compost at our self‑serve station located at 1600 W. Commonwealth Ave., next to the CNG Station. The pile will be replenished every Monday to ensure continued availability for the community. Help us support a greener, more sustainable Fullerton by stopping by and collecting only what you need.

What is Composting?
How Composting Works
-
Organic materials are collected and combined in the right balance of “greens” (food scraps, grass clippings) and “browns” (dry leaves, cardboard, wood chips).
-
Microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, begin breaking down the materials.
-
Oxygen and moisture help support the decomposition process.
-
As the pile breaks down, it generates heat, further accelerating composting.
-
After several weeks to months, the material becomes dark, crumbly compost that can enrich soil in gardens, landscapes, and agricultural settings.
Benefits of Composting
-
Reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfills.
-
Helps lower greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic materials from landfill disposal.
-
Creates a valuable soil amendment that improves water retention and soil structure.
-
Supports plant growth by adding essential nutrients back into the soil.
-
Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
-
Supports a circular system where organic materials are returned to the environment in a beneficial form.

Not only is composting a great way to gain nutrients needed for healthy soil, but it also helps us to meet California's SB 1383 waste diversion goals. To learn more about SB 1383 and how we are making strides to become a more sustainable, healthier state, click here.
Please note that if compost and/or mulch material is needed, Orange County residents can pick up the material for free at the Frank R. Bowerman's Bee Canyon Greenery.
