How to Dispose Sharps Safely & Legally

Step 1- Put used sharps in a puncture proof, plastic container. This does not include standard, plastic beverage containers.

When the container is 3/4 full, put the lid on, seal it with duct tape, and label DO NOT RECYCLE. Do not throw the container in the trash.

Step 2- Use the Zip Code search, found here, to locate container disposal options near you.

Step 3- Never throw used sharps- loose or in a plastic container- into the trash or toilet and never recycle.

In California, it is illegal to place containers of used sharps (needles, syringes, lancets, auto injectors, infusion sets, connection needles) to household trash.
