Fullerton, Ca –The Fullerton Library Director, Maureen Gebelein, announced that the book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand – a #1 New York Times Bestseller and named by Time Magazine as the best nonfiction book of the year -  is the Fullerton Reads selection for October of 2014.

Laura Hillenbrand's book Unbroken spent more than 125 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 14 at number one, and its popularity continues to grow. Only five nonfiction books in history have been on the list longer. The New York Times described the book as, "Ambitious and powerful... a startling narrative and an inspirational book." Unbroken was also the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year Award for Nonfiction.

Unbroken is the story of an Olympic runner, Louis Zamperini, who became an airman during the Second World War. Hillenbrand’s book takes us through his journey as he fights to stay alive after his plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. Unbroken chronicles Zamperini’s personal experience of the resilience of the human body, spirit, and mind.

An upcoming movie, directed by Angelina Jolie, based on the book will be out on Christmas Day. Movie trailer can be viewed at:

The Fullerton Reads campaign, formerly known as “One Book, One City” is modeled after a program developed by the American Library Association as a means of fostering civic unity through reading. Gebelein explained that the goal of the program is to “provide opportunities for people of all ages, cultures and ethnic backgrounds to come together to explore issues important to us all.”

“If you are looking for a book to read about a thrilling and inspirational journey or a great book club read, consider Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. We’d love to have you join our celebration in October,” added Gebelein.
