A magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the San Andreas Fault will strike Fullerton May 15, resulting in the collision and ultimate derailing of two Amtrak and Metrolink trains.

And with any luck, you won’t feel a thing!

The scenario for this planned disaster will be the City of Fullerton’s contribution to the county-wide “Golden Guardian Drill” designed to help communities test their earthquake emergency preparedness capabilities.

Coordinated by the Fullerton Fire Department, in cooperation with Amtrak and Metrolink, the Fullerton exercise will take place from 9 a.m.-noon on the railroad tracks behind Headquarters Fire Station, 312 E. Commonwealth Ave.

In addition, the city’s Emergency Operations Center at Fire Station 6 in northwest Fullerton will be activated for the event.

Students from Fullerton College will apply makeup on “victims” to simulate injuries received in such a crash.  The “victims” will be fire trainees and Fullerton Fire Explorer Scouts.

Members of the Fire Department’s CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program will also assist with the exercise.

Further information about the Golden Guardian Drill or the Fullerton exercise may be obtained by calling the Fire Prevention Division of the Fullerton Fire Department at (714) 738-6500.
