Police Impounds and Storages

Claim Your Vehicle

At the information desk of the Police Department, 237 W. Commonwealth Ave, Fullerton, Ca 92832:

  • Pay release fee of $120.00
  • Get a written release from the Police Department
  • Then you can claim your vehicle from the storage yard.

If your vehicle was impounded for:

  • Registration problem
    • Correct the problem before you can obtain a released.
    • Proof of correction will be required.
  • Unpaid Parking Tickets
    • Correct the problem before you can obtain a released.
    • Proof of correction will be required.
  • Unlicensed or Suspended Driver
    • Vehicle owner is liable for towing, storage, and release fees.
    • Vehicle subject to a 30 day hold OR show proof that the cited driver's license was reinstated.

Storage Validity Hearings

Storage validity hearings are provided by the Police Department pursuant to CVC,22852.

The purpose of the hearing is only to determine if the officer had lawful authority to store or impound the vehicle.

Request a hearing

You must submit your request within 10 days of the date appearing on the impound notice:

The appointments will be available Monday through Thursday (excluding holidays) 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Private Party Impounds (PPI)

Requesting a Tow

Pursuant to CVC, 22658, private property owners, or their agent, may request a tow company remove a vehicle from their property.

  • The requesting party must be present to indicate which vehicle(s) is/are to be towed.
  • The property must have signs prohibiting public parking and contain the phone number to the local traffic law enforcement agency. See Sign Requirements below.
  • The person requesting the tow needs to contact the Police Department prior to the vehicle(s) being towed. We will need the following information for each vehicle:
    • The vehicle manufacturer, model, and color
    • Vehicle license number and state of issue
    • The person authorizing the tow and a phone number for that person
    • The address that the vehicle will be towed from
    • The tow company to be used
  • Once the tow company has taken the vehicle, they are required to notify the Fullerton Police Department (714) 738-6715

Sign Requirements

  • Signs must be in plain view at all entrances to the property
  • A sign not less than 17 by 22 inches in size
  • Lettering not less than one inch in height
  • Prohibiting public parking and indicating that vehicles will be removed at the owner's expense,
  • Signs must contain the telephone number of the local traffic law enforcement agency.
  • Signs may also indicate that a citation may also be issued for the violation.
  • Fullerton Municipal Code 3.75.320 K requires the following on each sign:

NO PARKING

The words "PRIVATE PROPERTY" must be printed in red on a white background. The size of each letter in the words "PRIVATE PROPERTY" must be two inches in width, and must be printed with at least one-fourth inch brush strokes (width). (Ord. 2885 § 1 (part), 1996).
