COMMITTEE MEMBERS ABSENT:
Ron Bowers, Senior Civil Engineer
CALL TO ORDER:
The regular meeting of the Bicycle Users Subcommittee was called to order at 5:30 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The Minutes of the May 17, 2006 meeting were approved. .
1. DISCUSS NUTWOOD AVENUE FROM 57 FREEWAY TO STATE COLLEGE BOULEVARD
Concerns about bike signage of east campus north of Nutwood were expressed. Staff responded that the signage and improvements on east campus are being construction by CSUF and this is not under the control of the City. Construction is still in progress and staff will follow-up on what the final design will include.
Comments that additional construction warning signage is need on Nutwood. Class 2 Bike striping should be added to Nutwood. Staff responded that with 3 lanes of traffic in each direction that there is not enough room to add a striped bike lane.
2. DISCUSS FREQUENCY OF BICYCLE USERS SUBCOMMITTEE MEETINGS
Staff recommended that the meetings should be scheduled every two months. The BUSC recommended that the meetings be scheduled monthly and cancelled if no agenda items.
3. DISCUSS STATE COLLEGE GRADE SEPARATION
Staff described the grade separation project, limits of the project and the proposed sidewalk widths. A bike lane was not included with the project because State College Boulevard is not included as a bike route in the master plan.
Several members expressed concern that all grade separations should have adequate width for bike lanes. Staff responded that the project is being designed to accommodate a third lane of traffic in the future. The right lane of traffic should be wide enough for bikes until traffic demands necessitate a third lane be striped. The cost to widen the bridge 10’ to add a bike lane is not economically feasible for a street that is not designated a bike route.
Agenda items for next meeting include update of Lemon Sidewalk and Landscaping project, General plan status update and bike racks/lockers.
The regular meeting of the Bicycle Users Subcommittee was adjourned to the next regularly scheduled meeting of November 15, 2006.
