May Airport operations were 8,506, an increase of about 500 operations. The next FAPA meeting is set for July 10 at 6:00 p.m. Rod reported the South Ramp Project is going to be rebid for the second time. Construction should begin in August, 2001. The Airport Master Plan update study project is in the independent estimate stage. Rod has asked an independent engineering firm (Greiner) to estimate the project and the negotiations with the vendor (P&D Aviation) for price will follow. Rod reviewed the anticipated scope of work for the updated Airport Master Plan which will include an economic impact evaluation. Rod reported that the Airport budget was approved by City Council with no changes, but one Council member asked about the hangars which were to be built on the Airport by a private company. This project was never started although Council approved it almost two years ago. - AIRPORT SECURITY - Gate Card Revalidation
The security camera images will be accessible from the Internet. The DSL line has been installed at the Airport and the vendor will be in on Monday to finalize the software installation.
NEW BUSINESS - PLANE POCKETS PRESENTATION (Sunshades)
Rod introduced Jim Ross, a pilot based at Long Beach and the inventor of the Plane Pockets, who made the presentation. The Plane Pocket is used to protect parked aircraft from the elements. The material is an acrylic fabric guaranteed for five years. The poles are made of steel. The cost of the small Plane Pocket is $8,000 and it would take two months for delivery. Ed Kraly, from the audience, asked what liability would be covered. Jim Ross noted that his group has product liability insurance if there is a product defect. Otherwise, the aircraft owner's insurance would cover it. In response to a question from Ed Kraly, Mr. Ross said the Plane Pocket is easy to disassemble and it could be vulnerable being stolen. However, he could modify the product to require a special tool in order to be disassembled. The Plane Pocket does have a motion sensor light socket.
