Fullerton, CA - Fullerton Mayor, Sharon Quirk-Silva, will be joining dozens of volunteers in a “Service Day” in the City of Fullerton on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

Students from local schools will join the cadets from the Fullerton Police Department and volunteers from surrounding areas to clean and beautify Fullerton. Also joining forces in Fullerton for this “Service Day” is the Sunburst Youth ChalleNGe Program in Los Alamitos, a Community High School, organized by the California National Guard in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education. The Academy is a 5 1/2 month long residential "military style" academy structured to promote an academic environment where students will earn 55 High School credits, develop leadership, cooperation, and academic skills, while improving self esteem, pride, and confidence.

According to Mayor Quirk-Silva, “Service Day” is what Fullerton is all about. It is a collaboration of volunteers, young and old, coming together to help make Fullerton beautiful.”

Participants will gather at the new Fullerton Community Center located at 340 West Commonwealth Ave. at 8 am, for opening remarks and instructions. By around 8:30 am, volunteers will be dispatched to different locations within the City including the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center and a landmark home.

Interim Police Chief, Dan Hughes, commented, “It is such a privilege to serve in this City and we are proud to join with the Mayor in beautifying Fullerton.” Chief Hughes is expecting about 100 volunteers from Sunburst alone and hopes that this would “stimulate other groups to come and join us this Saturday.”
