Making a telephone call is probably one of the simplest acts we do every day. But for people with hearing impairment, the seemingly simple task of talking on a telephone can be a major challenge.
People whose hearing impairments make using a phone difficult will be interested in a special hearing clinic set for 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Aug. 17, at the Fullerton Senior Multi-Service Center.
The California Telephone Access Program (CTAP), which is sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission, will host the clinic. Individuals will be screened by an audiologist and, if found to qualify, may apply for and take home a free telephone specially designed for those with hearing impairments.
While the program is free, appointments are highly recommended, and may be made by calling the center at (714) 738-6305.
Under CTAP, special phones are offered free of charge to California residents whose impairments such as hearing loss, poor vision, speech and mobility problems, or cognitive disabilities inhibit their ability to use a regular telephone.
A CTAP representative is available at the center from 9:30-11:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month to answer questions about the services and products provided through CTAP, to explain the certification process for participation, and to assist individuals who wish to apply for a special phone. There is no income requirement to participate in CTAP.
The Fullerton Senior Multi-Service Center is located at 340 W. Commonwealth Ave., west of Harbor Boulevard, in Amerige Park.
Persons requiring special accommodations to attend the Aug. 17 program are asked to notify the center staff prior to that date.
