Residents living near Hillcrest Park and Lions Field will find some newcomers moving into their area in mid-May, but they need not worry:  The new arrivals will be there on a temporary basis only.

The “newcomers” will be the construction crews and equipment starting work on much-needed renovations to Lions Field, which abuts the north slope of the landmark park.  The field has long been home to many youth sports teams, including softball and Pop Warner Football.

“This project has been in the planning stage for nearly a decade and a half as the city worked with the various youth sports teams to come up with a design that addresses all needs,” said City Manager Chris Meyer.

“Funding for the approximately $13 million project was secured in the 2005 redevelopment bond, as well as from the 1998 Park Improvement Bond and park dwelling taxes.  The project will not impact the current city operating budget.”

The first phase of the project, Parks and Recreation Director Joe Felz said, “will consist of clearing, grading, stabilization and re-forestation of the park’s north slope, which is the south slope of the sports field.”

Once the first phase is complete, work will begin on installation of new playing fields, a new clubhouse/concession building, and new parking areas.

Felz said the entire project is expected to be completed by August 2010.

“During construction, residents may experience increased traffic, some traffic delays, and noise coming from the construction site,” Felz said.  “Residents can be assured the City will take steps to minimize any inconvenience caused by the construction.”
