Fullerton, CA – The exhibit, "Jean-Michel Basquiat: An Intimate Portrait," will kick-off with an opening reception at the Fullerton Museum Center on Saturday, August 3, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Basquiat began as an obscure graffiti artist in New York City in the late 1970s and evolved into an acclaimed Neo-expressionist and Primitivist painter by the 1980s. His life tragically came to an end at the age of 27 due to drug overdose.

The opening night will include live jazz, refreshments, documentary movie screening, food, and a special opportunity to watch GERMS a Los Angeles based artist inspired by Basquiat, create original artwork in an after-hours "Mudd Club" on the Museum patio.

“Jean-Michel Basquiat: An Intimate Portrait” will include photographs of Jean-Michel Basquiat taken by Nicholas Taylor, and will take an intimate look at the friendship between the two artists, a camaraderie that was born under the pulsating lights of the New York's famed Mudd Club in 1979.

The exhibit is organized and traveled by the Castellani Art Museum at Niagara University, curated by Michael J. Beam.

Admission is free for members of the Fullerton Museum Center, and $10 for the general public.  Tickets will also include admission to the exhibit.

Reservations and further information may be obtained by calling the Fullerton Museum Center at (714) 738-6545.

The museum is located at 301 N. Pomona Ave., east of Harbor Blvd., in downtown Fullerton.  Hours are noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday and Friday-Sunday, and noon – 8 p.m. Thursday.

Persons requiring special accommodations to attend the December 8 program or to view the exhibit are asked to notify the museum staff prior to coming to the museum.
