Fullerton, CA - Fullerton Library Director, Maureen Gebelein announced today that The Barbarian Nurseries by Hector Tobar will be their selection for Fullerton Reads this October and will be partnering for the first time with Fullerton College for this city-wide reading event.

Fullerton Reads: One Book, One College, One City will offer an opportunity for residents and students to read the same book and discuss it in a variety of venues, looking at the multi-layered themes running through the novel.

The book, The Barbarian Nurseries, is a journey about immigration and immigrant lives in Southern California, uncovers social class conflicts and racial and cultural divisions. The geography is familiar, since much of the book is set in Orange County as well as parts of Los Angeles County.

Hector Tobar is a novelist as well as journalist and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from the prestigious fiction writing program at UC Irvine. He revealed on a recent visit to the Fullerton Public Library that he lived in Fullerton during this time period, so he is also a former Fullertonian.

The Fullerton Reads campaign, formerly known as "One Book, One City" is modeled after a program developed by the American Library Association as a means of fostering civic unity through reading.  Gebelein explained that the goal of the program is to “provide opportunities for people of all ages, cultures and ethnic backgrounds to come together to explore issues important to us all.”

The library will present a variety of programs and discussions for both adults and children centered on the themes presented in Tobar's book during the month-long “Fullerton Reads” observance. The month will culminate with a program featuring the author himself in late October.

“If you are looking for something to read on vacation or with your book club, consider The Barbarian Nurseries, so you’ll be fully ready to participate in October,” added Gebelein.
