Approval of Minutes

Member Bowen made a MOTION to approve the minutes of the April 12, 2004, meeting with the following corrections:

Member Klinghoffer advised the correct spelling of the last name of the gentleman who suggested the Centennial Time Capsule should be Lineberry.
Vice Chair Spencer advised that Laura Hansen had volunteered at the Fullerton Beautiful Garden Tour Centennial booth and expressed her thanks.

Member Duncan seconded the MOTION. The MOTION was approved with the corrections.

Member Comments

Member Duncan requested the Centennial Calendar be updated with the following event:

September 19, 2004, 5 - 8:30 p.m. at Angelos & Vincis Ristorante will be the Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services Annual Dinner and Auction (FIES).

Chair Dalton expressed thanks to Vice Chair Spencer for chairing the April meeting and to the volunteers who worked the A Night In Fullerton, Railroad Days, and Fullerton Market. He then asked for an accounting of the sales. PIO Palmer Mudrick responded A Night In Fullerton and Railroad Days raised approximately $1,400, with Fullerton Market and Fire Service Day raising approximately $500.

Old Business

  1. Report of Banner Subcommittee:

Member Smithling reported 193 banners have been sold. The newspaper articles, which recently appeared, have not resulted in the orders hoped for. There are 49 banners that still need to be sold. He asked all Committee Members for help to get out and sell the banners as this last batch will be installed at the end of the month. Member Smithling suggested members make a list of contacts, both business and personal, and, when time, allows, make personal visits as well as calling. Member Ritto commented Member Smithling has done the majority of the selling, and that everyone on the Committee has to do their part and contribute evenly.

Home Depot, Sams Club, Morningside Park Vista, US Rentals, Western University, MG Disposal, Alcoa, Johnson Controls, Council Members, and Beckman are just a few individuals and businesses not contacted. Some available locations are Imperial, Orangethorpe, Bastanchury, areas by Yorba Linda and Brea. Chair Dalton volunteered to go to the Orangethorpe/Brookhurst area.

  2. Staffing for F.A.C.E.S. of Fullerton

Members Klinghoffer and Miller volunteered to staff the Centennial Booth with Member Klinghoffer offering to pick up the supplies and cash box Friday afternoon. The Centennial Booth will be located next to the Fullerton Collaborative Booth.

  3. Centennial Birthday Party July 14th:

Member Murphy advised that Costco has promised to provide whatever is needed regarding a marble cake. Contact will be made closer to the event to finalize the cake size and decoration. Member Smithling will contact Judy Lynn Bakery for a chocolate cake. Chair Dalton will contact Collettes Catering for a carrot cake. Discussion followed as to the type of decoration with suggestions of the Centennial logo, a reproduced photo of a person or building, the Centennial banner and the City Seal. The concert will be from 6:30 8 p.m. The cake would be served between 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

The concert program will consist of the music being stopped at 7:00 p.m., at which time Chair Dalton will introduce the Mayor who will say a few words followed by Chair Dalton saying a few words on the City at 100 years old. Honored guests will then be recognized and the ceremony will conclude by 7:20 or 7:30 p.m.

Community Services will take care of setting up the stage with microphones, hanging a banner and or ribbons along with setting up the cake tables.

Member Smithling will make contact with Mary Ann Blaine and family, Alice Chapmans grandchildren and Charles Chapmans great grandchildren, inviting them to attend and/or participate.

The Fire Department might be able to bring in a truck outfitted with the red, white and blue bunting; PIO Palmer Mudrick will follow up with Chief Reed.

Member Katsaros suggested contacting the County Board of Supervisors, state legislature and governors office asking for a resolution.

Member Heaton suggested the program should concentrate on honoring the Chapmans, original families, those celebrating their 100th birthday, and residents who have lived here for 90 100 years, and disregard the resolutions.

  4. Centennial Commemoratives

Discussion is tabled until the banners and shirts have been sold.

Member Smithling suggested a monument honoring the Centennial be placed in front of City Hall, and perhaps incorporating a time capsule. The Committee should be working for something to dedicate to the City at the end of the year and feels if everything goes well, there should be enough money.

Member Ritto stated contact was made with one of the possible developers of the Amerige Village Project who is willing to incorporate a Centennial Time Capsule cornerstone into one of the buildings.

PIO Palmer Mudrick reminded the Committee any type of monument would have to go through the Citys standard process for approval after obtaining designs, what materials to be used, and meet codes, etc.

Member Heaton suggested in lieu of a monument, some type of public work, one which would be appreciated and at the same time serve as a token or memorial. The community appreciates something that is visual, non-utilitarian and would serve the same purpose.

Member Murphy commented when the Police Department was developing its memorial honoring the two officers who were killed in the line of duty, it was suggested commissioning students at the college for a design, and the Committee could consider this option.

  5. Centennial Time Capsule:

No new discussions have taken place with Mr. Lineberry, reported Member Bowen, who said he feels getting the schools involved should be considered as to what should go into it. He offered to pursue this and see what kind of interest there is with the schools.

  6. New Business

  7. Centennial Booth at Fullerton Market

Chair Dalton asked what is the possibility of increasing the Committees participation in the Fullerton Market, if we can be accommodated each week, and will there be enough members volunteering to staff the booth. Chair Dalton said we could get all of the Thursdays until the June meeting if there are enough volunteers. Supplies and cash box must be picked up by 3:30, set up by 4:00 p.m., and then returned to PIO Sylvia Palmer Mudrick the following day. The following members volunteered:

May 13 Mike Rittos daughter, friend and George Miller
    May 20 Warrant Bowen @ 5:00 p.m.
May 27 Minard Duncan and Nancy Lee
June 03 Tom Dalton and Susan Katsaros
June 10 Bill Heaton and Nancy Spencer (tentative)

PIO Palmer Mudrick stated the Fire Department had made up a sign for the Centennial Booth at Fire Service Day which we now have to hang at the booth. Member Bowen suggested hanging the shirts inside the booth, allowing visitors to see what is being sold.

Vice Chair Spencer asked how each item is selling. PIO Palmer Mudrick responded the T-shirts are selling very well, ladies T-shirts are selling with lots of sizing comments, golf shirts are not selling, hat sales have tapered off, the pin sets are steady and the individual pins periodically. Member Ritto reminded those in attendance to purchase a shirt, if they have not already done so.

Member Heaton asked if there would be a Centennial Booth at the Chambers Business Expo at the Downtown Plaza from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. and offered to sell Centennial items at the Colleges Adventures in Science booth and Member Klinghoffer volunteered to staff the booth.

Adjournment

The regular meeting of the Incorporation Centennial Committee was adjourned at 5:10 p.m. The next meeting of the Incorporation Centennial Committee will be held on Monday, June 14, 2004, at 4:00 p.m. in the Council Conference Room.

Respectfully Submitted:

Laura Hansen
