Approval of Minutes

Vice Chair Spencer made a MOTION to approve the minutes of the March 08, 2004, meeting with the following addendum:

Member Duncan requested the names of the representing organizations be included on the Committee Roster.

Member Bowen seconded the motion. The motion was approved with the addendum.

Old Business

  1. Pin Sales by Business Community:

Chair Dalton advised the committee the Centennial Pin/Hat sales since the last meeting totaled $1,893.00. PIO Palmer Mudrick advised the Committee a total of $2,078.00 has been raised to date with an outstanding balance of $4,067.00 owed to the City. Member Ritto advised the committee that Fullerton Ace Hardware is really selling the pin sets and has requested more, with the other businesses not doing as well. The boxed sets are selling, not the individual pins. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk will have the dollar figures from the Museum sales at the next meeting. PIO Palmer Mudrick reported that for the first time the Committee is in the black as the City Council purchased 1,500 of the individual pins at $4.00 each. Those figures are not reflected here, as it is a separate account. Deposits made for banners sold bring the balance to approximately $21,000; with expenditures of $12,798.91 for banner preparation, that leaves an approximate balance of $8,700 in the Centennial account.

Vice Chair Spencer inquired as to how many boxed sets are available with PIO Palmer Mudrick, reporting approximately 250 sets are left.

Member Katsaros will be checking with the CSUF Titan Shop to see if they would be willing to sell any of the items. Member Murphy will check with the Police Department staff that work the evening/midnight shifts and weekends, and said she is willing to take 20 of the boxed sets to start.

  2. Report of Banner Subcommittee:

Member Smithling advised the Committee the banners are selling fast with approximately 120 sold to date. He said we need to sell another 30 - 35 to break even, and added he can use help from all members in spreading the word. The Chamber has helped by sending emails, etc. Chair Dalton reported letters have gone out to some businesses, with follow-up calls to be done.

Member Smithling advised the banners will go to print Tuesday, March 09, and that within two weeks he hopes to sell the remainder of the banners. A total of 257 banners can be sold. A sample of the banner artwork was passed around, and consists of panels showing Charles Chapman with the Chapman Building; George Fullerton with the train station; Amerige Brothers with the Farmers and Merchant Bank on Amerige; and Alice Chapman with the Fox Theater. A presentation on the banners will be made by Chair Dalton at the March 16 @ 4 p.m. Council meeting, where an enlarged version will be presented to Council. The prices are $200 for one, $750 for four, $1500 for eight and $150 for an individual banner with no name and/or hung on a pole. Chair Dalton commended the subcommittee on the great work it has done.

  3. Centennial Coins:

Discussion of the coins is on hold until it is determined there are funds available.

  4. Centennial Birthday Party - July 14th:

Cultural Events Specialist Mauk reported the band has been booked for the party. The Museum will handle the set up, canopies and balloons. Decisions on the birthday cake need to be made; such as how much money to spend, and whether anyone has contacts with a bakery. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk said the average number of people at the concerts is 300 - 500 and a cake large enough to serve 300 people should be sufficient. Several members offered to research and report back. Several suggestions made were to contact Costco, Judy Lynn's; Colette's Catering and ask various bakeries to donate a variety of cakes, plates, napkins, etc.

The Fullerton Market opens April 8th and the Committee needs to decide how often it wants to have a booth to sell Centennial items. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk suggested the Committee appoint a coordinator of volunteers for the Farmers Market, and that having a booth once a month or every other week would probably be more beneficial. The members agreed to once a month to start. Fullerton Heritage and Member Katsaros will work April 8th, Vice Chair Spencer and Member Miller will work May 6th, and Member Ranii and Chair Dalton will work June 3rd. The Museum will provide a canopy and tables, and members scheduled to work are asked to call prior to their date to find out where the booth will be located. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk advised those working should report to the information booth by 3:45 p.m. to find out where the Centennial booth has been set up.

  5. T-shirts:

Vice Chair Spencer reported the vendor used by Kay Miller in Economic Development is no longer in business. She has contacted member Smithling who states he can obtain the T-shirts but the Committee would then have to take them to a silk printer, yet to be contacted. He will report on the progress at the next meeting. Member Katsaros obtained price quotes of $14.90 each for a golf shirt, with a set-up fee of $60 - $100 for embroidery, and $4.45 each for a Hefty-T, with a set up fee of $70 for two-color silk screening. Both quotes were based on a quantity of 500. It was suggested Special-T's be contacted as they already have the City artwork (George Fullerton/Centennial Logo) for a price quote. Another suggestion was to connect the T-shirts with the banners in listing those banner sponsors on the back of the t-shirt, with George Fullerton and City Logo on the front. Member Ritto will contact Special-T's for a price quote. Chair Dalton stated by the next meeting the Committee should know the financial status and if we are in a position to move ahead with the t-shirts and coins. Member Katsaros advised the vendor who provided the shirt price quotes also has a coin connection.

New Business

Vice Chair Spencer reported the Fullerton Beautiful 'Garden Tour' is scheduled for April 18th. She said there will be a Centennial table available and requested volunteers for the table as there are more than 1,000 people scheduled to participate in the Tour.

The Committee discussed options available for any funds left to be distributed at the end of the year, with the Committee making the final decision on the dispersal of excess funds. Chair Dalton requested the Committee explore other options available to promote the centennial. Member Bowen commented there are service clubs that are unaware of the centennial celebrations. The suggestion was made to reprising the poster, which was introduced several years ago or using the new artwork to create a new poster. PIO Palmer Mudrick reported the May and April issues of the water bill newsletter will include a Centennial Snapshot, photographs then and now of various locations of Fullerton. Member Giasone stated the newspaper would like to use the color banner artwork for a Centennial story, with Member Ritto stating it would be possible.

Additionally, Member Ritto stated if new posters are done, more images/artwork can go on the poster, such as Walter Johnson, Amerige Brothers, Leo Fender etc., and as long as we can fund it and can sell them, it can be done. Fullerton Printing and Commonwealth Printing to be contacted for quotes. Member Katsaros suggested utilizing the poster as the invitation to the Centennial Birthday Party on July 14th as a cost-effective measure.

Member Miller asked what the American Legion can contribute to this committee. Chair Dalton suggested any Legion event be made an 'Official Centennial' event and advertise that along with purchasing one or more banners. Member Bowen suggested that since the American Legion hosts the Veterans' Day parade; it should be made a really big Centennial event.

Vice Chair Spencer reported that Fullerton Beautiful would like to do a more permanent observance of the Centennial celebration and has plans to remodel the Police Department patio, bringing back the original fountain. Dan Sereno, Landscape Division, will provide the cost figures and also contribute many of the planting materials and can make that a Centennial event.

Member Murphy stated that in conjunction with the Fullerton Beautiful event, the PD would probably have an open house, maybe sometime in the summer. Vice Chair Spencer and Member Murphy will begin looking at dates. Member Murphy states there are original fountain tiles available if needed. Members asked if the dedication could take place on the same day as the birthday party, July 14th.

PIO Palmer Mudrick read an email message from Joanne Hardy from the Library, about a book publishing deal in the offing that would work well with the City's Centennial Celebration. Contracts have not been signed, but the first chapter has been completed and the Library is moving forward. Projected publication date is October 8, 2004. In collaboration with CSUF and Fullerton Heritage, Cathy Thomas, the archivist of the Launer Local History Room at the Library, is leading the effort to publish a book of photographs of Fullerton's history. As part of Arcadia Publishing Company's series "Images of America," the book will present a visual history of Fullerton through photographs taken from the local history room collection. The book will be sold at stores and boutiques throughout town and Fullerton's Libraries, and this will be designated an official Centennial Project.

The question was asked if parking concerns have been addressed for the Centennial Birthday on July 14th. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk said it is under discussion although nothing definitive has been set.

Member Comments

Member Bowen reminded all that the CSUF Centennial Baseball Game is Sunday, March 14th. It was suggest the Centennial Logo be added to the Judy Smith Transport "of Fullerton" poster and the poster by reprinted for the Centennial. Vice Chair Spencer will speak with Trasport and ask for her help.

Member Katsaros advised the Marcy Mulville Foundation Tea will be at the Fullerton Arboretum May 15, and the Foundation is planning to make it an official Centennial event.

Member Murphy requested that if the Committee is able to fund either the T-shirts or posters, a supply be provided to the PD for those working different shifts/days.

Member Smithling advised the Committee that the next two weeks are important for the banner sales. Any questions, contact Ron. PIO Palmer Mudrick reminded the members that Chair Dalton and Member Ritto will make a presentation at the March 16 City Council meeting of the banner artwork.
