Approval of Minutes

Old Business

  1. Report of Banner Subcommittee:

Member Smithling reported the banners are up, with the feedback being positive. So far, 168 banners have been sold, with space available for 183. Currently there are eight Amerige Brothers, six Chapman, one Alice Chapman, and none left of George Fullerton. The subcommittee recommends making another 50 - 25 of Alice Chapman and 25 of George Fullerton. If a new design is wanted, the cost would rise, whereas if we stick with what is already made, our costs may go down. Member Smithling is hoping to put banners on Brookhurst, Euclid, and Orangethorpe. Amerige Heights is full as well as Harbor Blvd. Member Katsaros informed the committee that CSUF would not be purchasing any banners due to the budget concerns. Lead-time will be 2 3 weeks to produce a new batch. No banners will be installed until the new batch is ready and all banner orders are in.

The committee commended the Banner Subcommittee for the tremendous job it has done with the banners.

Suggestion was made to see if the Register would run an ad or article, something similar to what the Observer did, and with that, there should be no change in current marketing.

Member Klinghoffer made a MOTION to approve the ordering and processing of 50 more banners. Member Ritto seconded the MOTION. The MOTION was approved.

  2. Staffing for A Night in Fullerton and Fullerton Beautiful Garden Tour:

Night In Fullerton is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on April 30, 2004. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk states one crew of 2 people would be sufficient for staffing. PIO Palmer Mudrick suggested combining the information booth with the Centennial booth, with Laura Hansen and PIO Sylvia Palmer Mudrick working.

The Fullerton Market was quite successful, selling $170 in merchandise, including all of the hats.

Vice Chair Nancy Spencer will work the Fullerton Beautiful Garden Tour event.

The Taste in Fullerton event was discussed, with Member Heaton offering to speak with the Chamber to see if its ticket booth could also handle selling of pins.

Member Bowen will make contact with Fred Canfield for the Railroad Days event. PIO Palmer Mudrick advised a flier and application was received and passed on to Chair Dalton.

Member Bowen will inquire with Fred Canfield if an application from the committee has been received.

Faces of Fullerton event, May 15 at the Downtown Plaza, 10 am 3 pm. Member Smithling has reserved one table with a canopy. Hopefully there will be more items to sell. The committee questioned if more hats could be donated. Member Heaton will contact the Chamber to find out who the vendor was for the first batch. Member Smithling said the Committees booth would be next to the Fullerton Collaborative booth, adding the main objective of the event is to interact with the public. There should be enough time to get a presentation together, along with items to sell, and said he has all of the paperwork necessary to turn in for reserving 1 or more tables. Member Smithling states since there is money available, the committee does not need to rely on donations, and suggests making more hats and maybe shirts.

PIO Palmer Mudrick reminded those who are working these events that they need to see her for the cash box and table banner before each event.

  3. Centennial Birthday Party July 14th:

Cultural Events Specialist Mauk advised getting 3 cakes, each one large enough to serve 100, planning for 300. Member Smithling spoke with Judy Lynn Bakery, and said he just needs to get information that is more definitive and get it to them, as they were receptive to donating. Contact still needs to be made with Costco and Collettes Catering for a full sheet cake. The Museum will have all of the plates and utensils. The concert will be from 6:30 8 p.m. The cake would be served between 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Member Murphy will be contacted regarding Costco.

PIO Palmer Mudrick advised the committee that as of today, $4,700 is in the Centennial account. The street banner was discussed and if the committee still wants it, it needs to be ordered now for the South Harbor position. The cost is $431 plus tax for the street banner per Member Smithling. Cultural Events Specialist Mauk will contact Ron and Chair Dalton for the wording of the banner.

Member Ritto suggested inviting those residents celebrating their 100th birthday to the concert and acknowledging them. Vice Chair Spencer and Member Bowen suggested including those who have lived in Fullerton their entire lives and suggested names should be brought to the next meeting for further discussion.

  4. Centennial T-shirts:

Vice Chair Spencer reported, she has brought some items from the museum, including the top-selling T-shirts. From Redevelopment, she brought the George Fullerton T-shirt, which shows Fullerton wearing red sunglasses and earrings. Also from the museum were suckers and magnets. Suggestions for a Centennial shirt included using the banner, the City seal or the Centennial logo. Discussion followed, with the consensus being to use the logo on the T-shirts. Vice Chair Spencer suggested forming a subcommittee to decide on these T-shirts. Member Smithling stated he would like to digitize the logo, costing $150, enabling him to embroider it. He suggested Committee members could wear the T-shirts at the various events. He said he would donate the cost of digitalizing the logo. Someone will need to go through the catalogs to decide color and style. Lead-time is one week. Member Katsaros offered to look through the catalogs for the golf shirt and hats. If the artwork can be obtained from the Chamber, it would save some time. Members agreed to purchase the embroidered golf shirts.

PIO Palmer Mudrick suggested that Member Ritto be allowed to follow through with the silk-screened T-Shirts at a cost of $4.75 each in both the male and female styles.

Vice Chair Spencer also displayed George Fullerton, ostrich and orange label tote bags from the Museum.

Member Duncan made a MOTION to allow Member Ritto to design the T-shirt, reflecting the Fullerton Centennial, and to order the T-shirts, in male and female styles, with the silkscreen logo on the front, with the order not to exceed 288. The MOTION was seconded and approved.

Member Smithling suggested a flex hat at a cost of $12 is a popular style. For the golf shirts, Member Smithling stated he will do them at cost.

MOTION made by Member Heaton to purchase embroidered golf shirts at a cost not to exceed $15 per shirt, with a maximum of 72 shirts, and to order embroidered hats at a cost not to exceed $10, with a maximum of 144. Member Miller seconded the MOTION. The MOTION was approved.

  5. New Business

  6. Bike To Work Day

Assistant Planner Heather Sowers was introduced to the Committee. Heather explained that part of her responsibilities is in working with the Energy and Recycling Programs and specifically spends 25% of her time dealing with environmental issues/programs. Heather spoke on the Orange County Transportation Agencys regional Bike To Work Day on May 20th. She said she thought this type of event might be suited for the Centennial Calendar and requested being placed on the agenda for the purpose of requesting official Centennial status. The Fullerton Magazine will have an article on the event in an upcoming issue, and she has obtained a commitment from some of the downtown businesses and some of the larger employers to participate. Additionally, there will be a dedicated page on the City website where registration forms, maps and more information will be available for review or downloading. The goal of this event is to make it a safe and fun experience for all. Maintenance check-ups along with bike safety presentations are planned. The Committee members agreed to include May 20, 2004, as Bike To Work Day an official Centennial event. Questions can also be referred to Heather Sowers @ 738 6884.

  7. Centennial Time Capsule:

Member Bowen stated he had been contacted by Bill Libery and would like to do a time capsule in commemoration of the centennial. What would go in it and where would it be placed were discussed, with further discussion tabled for a future agenda item. Member Ritto suggested Mr. Libery determine where to put a capsule.

  8. Centennial Poster:

Vice Chair Spencer advised the Committee members the museum would donate 500 of the 1987 posters to the Centennial Committee. The artist, Judy Smith Trasport, is currently creating a brand new poster of the Red Cross Building at Hillcrest Park on Lemon and showing the playground, and will be completed shortly.

One suggestion made was to include one poster with a pin/hat/shirt combo. The question of how would one make it a Centennial poster was asked. After some discussion, the members agreed to table the Centennial Poster item. Making smaller versions of the banners, as a promotional item, was discussed, utilizing the artwork available. Member Ritto will research and obtain prices and report at the next meeting.

  9. Police Department Fountain Project

Maintenance Services has determined the cost for renovating the fountain is estimated at $2,000 along with the plant material, which Fullerton Beautiful will underwrite. The unveiling and dedication is scheduled for July 14, probably in the afternoon. Priscilla Stead, a board member, who currently maintains the landscape, will design a plan.

Member Comments

Member Smithling requested that the Committee recognize and appreciate those businesses and individuals who purchased the Centennial Banners and supported the Incorporation Centennial Committee. Suggested an article in the paper, and a letter from the Mayor. PIO Palmer Mudrick confirmed a letter from the Mayor and a Certificate could be done and requested the names and addresses Member Heaton commented that a certificate is not indicated, a letter is fine in acknowledgment, and maybe closer to the July 14th event, if there is a program planned, present them with certificates. Member Smithling suggested a centennial pin could accompany the letter.

Adjournment

The regular meeting of the Incorporation Centennial Committee was adjourned at 5:35 p.m. The next meeting of the Incorporation Centennial Committee will be held on Monday, May 10, 2004, at 4:00 p.m. in the Council Conference Room.

Respectfully Submitted:

Laura Hansen
